Food Production

Fertilizers and pesticides have chemicals that enhance food production. Both types have some positive impact on food production. Countries that struggle with famine and frequent natural disasters benefit immensely from increased food production due to the application of fertilizers and pesticides. There is also concern about water pollution and other negative issues resulting from their use.

Contamination

Chemicals from both fertilizers and pesticides can pollute the water when erosion carries the chemicals off the farms after each rainfall. These chemicals find their way into rivers, lakes and the oceans killing and contaminating aquatic life.

Farmer workers who routinely expose themselves to pesticides have exhibited neurological symptoms such as headaches and tremors.

Fishery products that go to the markets are affected by pesticides that drained into the water. The suffocation of aquatic life can have a negative effect on the breeding grounds of fishes, thus raising concerns in the fishing industry. http://www.livestrong.com/article/139831-the-effects-fertilizers-pesticides/

Organic Food

Fertilizers and pesticides both have important roles to play in reaching global food demand. However, those role can diminish if consumers adapt to more healthier eating habits and purchase more organic food.

If the demand for organic food increases farmers, particularly in more developed countries, can produce more organic products. The increase in organic food production would allow farmers to cut back on the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

We cannot strive for a healthier living environment without applying our best efforts towards safeguarding our aquatic life.
